Venice (Villanelle)

I had a beautiful thought in my head
I dreamt of world made of heavenly glean
But it was gone when I woke from my bed

All of the darkness, the world learned to shed
Both conscience and virtues, of all were made clean
I had a beautiful thought in my head

Man put down his sword and read books instead
No need for a shield or a killing machine
But it was gone when I woke from my bed

With evil unheard and slander unsaid
No need for destruction when hate is unseen
I had a beautiful thought in my head

The coldest of hearts grew to know warming red
Creating a peaceful, lasting serene
But it was gone when I woke from my bed

And all of the best still lay up ahead
More greatness, I know, I did not yet dream
I had a beautiful thought in my head
But it was gone when I woke from my bed

My heart aches for all those involved in the Colorado shootings yesterday.
